P. graveolens L’Herit.

Commonly known as Malvarosa in Sicily, Pelargonium graveolens has been a timeless presence in countryside gardens and on sun-drenched terraces for generations. The foliage is prized for its rich rose fragrance—a scent derived from its high geraniol content, an essential oil widely used in the fine fragrance industry. This botanical heritage led to its widespread cultivation across Sicily.

The plant is exceptionally hardy and resilient, thriving even in challenging conditions such as poor, arid soils or in competition with the roots of other plants. Its distinctive tri-lobed leaves are deeply serrated and jagged, vaguely resembling those of a daisy. Throughout the season, it produces an abundance of medium-small mauve flowers, elegantly detailed with carmine spots on the upper petals. A vigorous grower, it quickly develops into a substantial, well-branched shrub.
