Malvarosa nursery plant: about us
The Choice of a Specialist Nursery
Our company is located on the eastern slope of Mount Etna, not far from the sea, in a fortunate area of Sicily, where the volcano provides numerous benefits. The climate here is mild, the groundwater is abundant, and the soil is fertile.
The nursery was established on land previously planted with lemon trees and, before that, with a vineyard. Towards the end of the 19th century, a country house was built on this generous land, which still serves as the heart of our company’s life today.
Currently, our nursery focuses on promoting beauty through an understanding of specific collections of unique and unusual plants. These plants are linked to Sicilian and Mediterranean traditions, as well as other varieties which, for reasons unknown, have never been cultivated in our region.
As a result, we have chosen to specialise, avoiding the approach of a “generalist” nursery that produces a bit of everything and steering clear of trends that come and go. We like to think we are offering something new and different, providing our customers with personal and creative contributions to their gardens, balconies, and terraces. We feel a responsibility to engage in productive, purposeful activities guided by a clear vision and aligned with the greater ecosystem that connects us all. For us, cultivating the land means cultivating the entire Earth.
Pelargonium
We’ve long recognized that many common plants are only superficially understood. Therefore, we’ve chosen to focus our attention on plants that, despite their universal familiarity and common presence in daily life, often hold unimaginable surprises. Among them, a prime example that perfectly matches these characteristics is the geranium (or more accurately, the pelargonium).
We aim to show our customers how many forms, colours, and smells a pelargonium can have and how beautiful this plant can be in various settings.
After a few years, we added a collection of jasmine plants to our pelargoniums. Colours and scent of home, of our land (there’s no place in Sicily where you can’t find jasmines), and also fragrances that whisper tales of the past or evoke exotics, faraway lands.
Jasminum
Over the years, our customers, initially wary and sceptical, have come to appreciate our proposals. They have demonstrated their ability to create original and imaginative green spaces, which have profoundly inspired us to continue our work.
To help our customers understand how to make the most of jasmines, we have created a dedicated space: The Garden of Jasmines. This area, located adjacent to our nursery, allows visitors to admire mature plants, learn to recognise them, and gather ideas and suggestions.
This website is designed to inform you about our production, revealing the ‘secrets’ of each variety and species in our collection and inviting you into our online garden. We also invite you to visit us in person at our nursery and Bed and Breakfast.
