In tanti spesso ci chiedete se nel nostro catalogo abbiamo una di queste piante, oltre al famosissimo Rincospermum o meglio Trachelospermum jasminoides, che molto frequentemente viene scambiato per un gelsomino.
Iniziamo col dire che i “veri” gelsomini sono tutte quelle piante che appartengono al genere Jasminum. Tra questi ce ne sono alcuni che, al contrario di quello che ci si aspetterebbe da un gelsomino, non hanno i fiori bianchi né sono profumati.
Una recente riclassificazione poi ha cambiato il genere di alcuni gelsomini con fiore giallo, da Jasminum a Chrysojasminum.
Nonostante il loro profumo intenso, i loro fiori grandi, numerosi o appariscenti, nonché il nome “gelsomino” assegnatogli dalla tradizione, le seguenti piante non sono affatto gelsomini, non appartengono quindi né al genere Jasminum né al genere Chrysojasminum.
Stephanotis floribunda o gelsomino del Madagascar, un altro rampicante che produce fiori bianchi e carnosi spesso confusi con il J. sambac.
Anche i fiori della Carissa o gelsomino africano traggono in inganno l’occhio inesperto, che confonde questa pianta sempreverde e spinosa con il J. grandiflorum.
Ed infine la Gardenia, arbusto di piccole o medie dimensioni caratterizzato da fiori profumati che spesso vengono erroneamente scambiati con quelli di J. sambac ‘Arabian night’.

Di piante appartenenti al genere Jasminum e Chrysojasminum ce ne sono davvero tante, oltre 200 specie! Per essere degli estimatori non occorre certo saperle riconoscere tutte, pensate però alla bella figura che potreste fare quando il vostro vicino vi mostrerà il suo bel gelsomino profumato e voi potrete rispondere: no, non è un gelsomino!
